backup3G’s Recovery module lists all the current backups in the media database, including Windows backups. If you don’t know which media set contains the correct backup, you can search the media contents table for all backups of a particular Windows bject.

These are the types of Windows objects you can restore from:

• registry keys
• user profiles
• files or directories

This guide covers recovering Windows specific objects. See the Recovering Data section of the backup3G User Manual for more details on file and directory recovery.

Registry Recovery

You can recover selected keys or all keys from a registry backup. When recovering the registry there should be no users logged in. Also the host will require a reboot to complete the recovery. The registry will not be updated with the recovered keys until the host is rebooted. There are two methods that can be used to recover the registry:

• registry reboot
• registry recover

The difference is the registry reboot method will automatically reboot the host to complete the recovery. Steps

1. From the Recovery module, select the media set containing the registry instance to be restored.
2. Select Contents > Open to list the contents of the media set. Each file in the media set corresponds to an item in the backup job. If you want or to recover the entire registry, choose the Registry entry and choose either Recover > Interactive or Recover > Background. If you want to recover only selected keys choose the Registry entry and select Index > Open.
3. If you chose to recover only selected keys you will be presented with the selection of keys available for recovery.
4. Highlight the keys you want to recover and select Recover > Background.
5. Fill in these fields in the ‘Recovery Details’ prompt form and press Accept.

Recover to host

Select the name of the host to which the registry keys will be recovered. The default is the original host.

Drive/Pool

Press Choose to see the list of valid drives and drive pools. Choose a drive and press Accept.

Auto unload

Select ‘yes’ to unload the backup tape from the drive after the recovery has finished or ‘no’ to leave the tape loaded.

Recovery Method

Choose either ‘registry reboot’ or ‘registry recover’. The ‘registry reboot’ method will reboot the host on completion of the recovery. The host will need to be rebooted for the registry to be updated with the recovered keys.

User Profile Recovery

You can recover a single profile, a selection of profiles or the entire list of profiles. Each profile will be recovered to it’s original location. You cannot change the location profiles are recovered to.

Caution It is possible for users to be removed or for their details to change. These details are stored in the registry. Ensure that the profile recovery does not break this integrity. Steps

1. From the Recovery module, select the media set containing the profiles to

be restored.

1. Select Contents > Open to list the contents of the media set. Each file in the media set corresponds to an item in the backup job. If you want to recover the entire profile list, highlight the Profile entry and choose either Recover > Interactive or Recover > Background. If you want to recover only selected profiles choose the Profile entry and select Index > Open.
2. If you chose to recover only selected profiles you will be presented with a selection of profiles available for recovery.
3. Highlight the keys you want to recover and select Recover > Background.
4. Fill in these fields in the ‘Recovery Details’ prompt form and press Accept.

Recover to host

Select the name of the host to which the profiles will be restored. The default is the original host.

Drive/Pool

Press Choose to see the list of valid drives and drive pools. Choose a drive and press Accept.

Auto unload

Select ‘yes’ to unload the backup tape from the drive after the recovery has finished or ‘no’ to leave the tape loaded.

Recovery Method

Choose ‘profile recovery’.

Data Recovery

Target Host and Directory

Some backup3G users have restrictions on which hosts and directories they can restore to (see Restricting Recovery Destinations by Role in the backup3G User Guide for more details). For example users with the Operator role may be restricted to restoring files to the D:/tmp directory on any host, and to any directory on host ‘playpen’.

If you have any such restrictions, backup3G will ask to choose a target host and directory from the list of permitted destinations. If you have no restrictions you can choose any host and directory in the ‘Recovery Details’ prompt form.

Steps

1. From the Recovery module, select the media set containing the backup to be restored.
2. Select Contents > Open to list the contents of the media set. Each file in the media set corresponds to an item in the backup job.
3. Select the files to restore:
4. Select Recover > Background.
5. If you have any recovery restrictions, backup3G will list which directories and hosts you can restore to. Choose a destination.

If you have no restrictions, this step is skipped. To select a file: click on it.

To select several files: click and drag from the first file down to the last.

To add a file to the selection: Control-click on it.

To extend the selection: Shift-click on another file.

To select all files: press Control-Shift-click

Fill in these fields in the ‘Recovery Details’ prompt form.

Recover to host

Select the name of the host to which the files should be restored. The default is the original host.

Into directory

Specify where the restored files should go. The target directory will be created if it doesn’t already exist. When you restore the backup files, any existing files of the same name in the target directory will be overwritten. Therefore, it is best to restore to a temporary directory first.

Drive/Pool

Press Choose to see the list of valid drives and drive pools. Choose a drive and press Accept.

Auto unload
