This section explains how to install and deinstall EWC for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003. It also discusses how to perform the initial configuration necessary to start using the EWC software.
To install EWC on Windows you will need:
- distribution file containing the Enterprise Windows Client
- to log in as Administrator
- TCP/IP installed and configured
To install EWC on your Windows host you must run the distribution file.

Installing on Windows
The installation procedure copies the EWC files to a target directory you specify, some files are copied to the system directory. The COSserver Daemon is also installed.
Which hosts should EWC be installed on
The EWC software is installed on hosts that you want to backup data from or hosts that have tape drives you want to backup to.
To Install EWC
- Log in as Administrator.
- Select Settings > Control Panel from the Start button.
- Open the Add/Remove program icon.
- Insert Setup disk 1 or CD into the appropriate drive.
- Press the Install button and then the Next button to search for the install program.
- The install program should locate the setup program. Example. If you are installing from floppy disk and the floppy drive is A, the command line for installation should be: A:\SETUP.EXE. Press Finish to start the installation process.
- The installation screen should now be displayed. If at any time you wish to exit from the installation, press the Cancel button.
- Enter your User Name and Company Name.
- The installation program will now ask you for the destination directory for the EWC software. To change from the default location, press the Browse button and enter the new location.
- Choose the setup type. The Typical setup type will install the entire EWC software including help and utility programs. The compact setup type will install the minimum files required. The Custom setup type allows you to choose which components you wish to install.
- Specify the program group to add the EWC icon to. If you do not want any icons added, clear the name field.
- The EWC software is now installed in the specified directory. If installing from disk, you may be required to insert other disks. You will be prompted as necessary.
- Specify the Master/Control host. This is the backup3G UNIX host that the backup configuration is performed on. Entering a hostname and pressing Accept will add an entry to the rhosts file. This entry will allow the backup3G Master/Control host to access this host.
- If you are installing onto a NTFS, all files will be set to Full Control Administrator and Read Access by SYSTEM.
- The directory /tmp will be created on the system drive. This directory is used to create temporary files and must not be removed.
This completes the installation phase on Windows. The next step is to configure the EWC settings for this host.
Configuring EWC
Configuration of EWC requires:
- licensing EWC
- setting up remote access
- Remote Shell Daemon configuration
Licensing EWC
To licence EWC you first must obtain a valid licence key for the host for your distributor. Once you have this key:
- Select Start > All Programs > COSmanager > Enterprise Windows Client
- Press the Licence button.
- The hostname, Product code and Options fields should match those on your licence key sheet.
- If your key has an expiry date, enter it in the Expiry field in the form YYYYMMDD.
- Enter the licence key in the Licence key field and press Accept.
The EWC should now be licensed. However, if you got an Illegal key error message, the key you entered is invalid. Check that the licence details match those on your licence key sheet. All details must match exactly for the key to be accepted.
Setting up Remote Access
Remote access is required to incorporate this host and its resources into the Enterprise Backup Solution. Remote access is required by the following hosts:
- backup3G master host
- any hosts with tape drives you want to have access to
- hosts that require access to the local tape drive

To allow a remote host to access this host:
- Start the Enterprise Windows Client and select Enterprise Windows Client from the COSmanager menu.
- Press the Remote button.
- Enter the name of the remote host you want to allow access from.
- Select the Operating System running on that host.
- Press Accept to allow that host access to this host.
If you are allowing access from a Windows host, a SYSTEM entry will be added to the rhosts file for that host. If you are allowing access from a UNIX host, COSmanager and root entries are added to the rhosts file for that host. If you want to remove access from any hosts, you will have to edit the rhosts file manually using a text editor like notepad.

If you use notepad to modify the rhosts file, be sure to save the file as “rhosts.”, otherwise notepad will save the file as “rhosts.txt”. |
Remote Shell Daemon Configuration
The Remote Shell Daemon (rshd) is used for allowing remote users to run commands on the local host. The rshd is run as a service and listens on the standard rsh port for requests. The rhosts file (see Setting up Remote Access - above) is used to govern which hosts and users have the ability to run commands on this host. For a user to be able to run a command via the rshd, an entry for that user must be in the rhosts file against the remote host.

The rshd included with EWC is specifically designed for use with EWC only. The rshd is required to run as the SYSTEM user so that sufficient privilege exists for backup and restoration of files. Therefore any commands run by the rshd service
will be run as the SYSTEM user.
Installation and Deinstallation
The Remote Shell Daemon (rshd) should have already been installed during the installation of EWC. The rshd program is installed in the Windows System32 directory. If you need to install or deinstall the rshd service:
- Select Programs > Command Prompt from the Start button.
- To install the rshd service type rshd -install.
- To deinstall the rshd service type rshd -remove.
Controlling the Remote Shell Daemon service
There are two ways to control services in Windows NT, through the Services Control Panel or via the command prompt using the net command. The net command can only be used for starting and stopping services. Use the Services Control Panel for configuration of the rshd service.
The Services Control Panel
- Log in as Administrator.
- Select Settings > Control Panel from the Start button.
- Open the Services program icon. The Services panel now displayed allows you to start and stop or configure the services.
- To start the rshd service select the RSH Daemon entry and press the Start button. If the rshd service is running and you want to stop it, select the RSH Daemon entry and press the Stop button.
- It is recommended that you set the rshd service to start automatically on host startup. To do this, press the Startup button, set the Startup Type to Automatic and press OK. Next time the host is booted, the rshd service will be automatically started.
From the command prompt
- Select Programs > Command Prompt from the Start button.
- To see which services are running type net start.
- To start the rshd service type net start rshd.
- To stop the rshd service type net stop rshd.
Deinstalling from Windows
Deinstallation of the EWC software:
- removes all EWC programs and registry entries
- remove EWC menu entries
- optionally remove shared programs including rshd and bash
Steps
- Log in as Administrator.
- Stop the COSserver and/or rshd services from a command prompt by typing net stop rshd. Remove the rshd service by typing rshd - remove.
- Select Settings > Control Panel from the Start button.
- Open the Add/Remove program icon.
- Select the Enterprise Windows Client 3.1.1 entry and press the Add/Remove button.
- Confirm removal by pressing the Yes button.
- During the deinstallation process you will be prompted for the removal of certain shared files. These files form part of the EWC application but were installed in the system directory structure. Unless you intend to use these programs you should remove them. To remove all shared programs press the Yes To All button.
If the deinstallation is unsuccessful, you can remove the problem files manually
